JROTC may be taken as a freshman course. Freshman are required to take Geography as one of their subjects; however, you may substitute JROTC for the Geography requirement in each of the majors except Excel and Social Studies. Social Studies majors may delay the Foreign Language requirement for one year, so they may take ROTC as a freshman.
The primary goal of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens. Some of the desired learning outcomes are citizenship, leadership development, physical fitness, development of communicative skills, self-discipline, and self-confidence. Enrollment in JROTC does not in any way obligate you for future military service. JROTC extracurricular activities offer an opportunity to participate as a member of the Raider Team, Rifle Team, and Color Guard.

COURSE SYLLABUS -- The mission or goal of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens. The Louisville Male High School's JROTC program is the oldest in Kentucky and may very well be the oldest in the nation. The program is an integral part of the traditional concept and basically operates as follows: The course is a part of the school's curriculum and one credit is earned for the successful completion of each year. JROTC may be taken all four years of high school and may be chosen as a major. The program prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school. It provides instruction and rewarding opportunities, which will benefit the student, the community, and the nation.
