IN-HOUSE WORKSHOP APPLICATION HAS BEEN EXTENDED

The application deadline for the in-house HOBY workshop has been extended to Monday, December 14.  Please pick up an application in the counseling office or Mr. Sweeney's Room 103.  A one-page (500 word) essay is required with each application.  This opportunity is open to all freshmen and any sophomore that did not attend the workshop in May.  We extended the deadline because of the confusion caused with the State Leadership Seminar versus the in-house workshop; the applications were due too close together.  This is a great opportunity that we don't want you to miss.

GSP and GSA

It's Governor's Scholars time!  Congratulations to those students who made it through the first round of GSP cuts.  It's a long journey but well worth the wait.  Kudos to everyone who took the initiative to apply.

GSA applications are due at the end of December.  See your counselor for more information.

G.P.A.

Why is my G.P.A. (Grade Point Average) so important?  Your G.P.A. is a gauge of your knowledge.  The more you apply yourself and study, the better chance you would have to earn a higher G.P.A.

G.P.A. is used on Governor's Scholars Applications, scholarship forms, and by college admission offices.  KEES money earned is based on your G.P.A.  The higher your G.P.A. the more money you earn; see their website for a sliding scale.  Auto insurance companies offer discounts to students with a higher G.P.A.  Fraternities and sororities also have G.P.A. requirements before you are eligible to pledge.  Don't leave your G.P.A. to chance, earn it!

The College Preparation Page is not for seniors only, it's for you too.  Don't wait until senior year to think about college, think about it NOW!

  • If you are interested in the Governor's Scholars Program, talk to your counselor NOW.
  • The PSAT exam is the gateway to the National Merit Scholarship program.  The test is given during Junior year, but start asking questions about it when your student is a Sophomore.  National Merit is the largest single source scholarship organization in the U.S.  Male historically has 1 - 2 finalist and 10 - 15 students receive scholarship money form this source, most of the time full scholarships to the college of their choice.  This is a low number for a school that has a college prep focus and we believe Male has many more academically gifted students who could qualify.  Even if you do not qualify for National Merit Scholarships, your test scores may attract interest from many colleges.
  • What do you have to look forward to this school year?  ACT and SAT Testing, HOBY participation, getting your drivers' permit, and no longer being a Freshman.  Memories are yours to make.

  • If you are interested in the Governor's Scholars Program, talk to your counselor NOW.
  • As the newest Bulldogs to Male, we encourage you to get involved in school by participating in sports, clubs or teams.  Another way to get involved is by attending events.  Your experience will be more enjoyable and rewarding if you participate.
  • How are your grades?  Your attendance record?  Your participation level?  Help is available if you need it through ESS, the Writing Center, Beta Club members, the Counseling Department and other places.  Be proactive about your education!
  • LMHS does not offer a summer school program.  All courses failed must be made up during the summer and at the expense of the family.  Since our credits are for an entire year, both sections or semesters of courses must be made up.  Making up coursework does not guarantee that students exited will be allowed to return to Male.
  • What do you have to look forward to this school year?  Your first pep rally and homecoming dance, learning the direction of the stairwells, your first Spirit Week, your first Male - Manual game as a student, and learning the upperclassmen rule.  Memories are yours to make.

Internet Choices

What goes on the Internet stays on the Internet.  Did you know college recruiters and future employers look at online diaries like Facebook and MySpace to gain insight to your character and personality?  Anything you put online, including pictures, could be used against you.  Make wise choices each and every day.  Helpful Sites -- Safe Teens http://www.safeteens.com//?page_id=5  I-Safe  http://www.i-safe.com
